The Start of Something Great!

Our first book club meetings, one for students reading the SSYRA books and one for Jane Austen fans, were held at the end of last week and the beginning of this week. I think they were both a fantastic success! I had been stressed out the previous week, but getting together with people who love books and enjoying some socializing really helped me to de-stress and return to my natural positive state of mind; so I have to personally thank everyone who participated, for making the nights so enjoyable.

The first meeting was for 3rd through 8th grade students reading the Sunshine StateYoung Reader's Award books. Though this group was small, we had big fun talking about our summer reads and rereads including TheGraveyard Book, The Sorcerer's Stone, and The Lightning Thief
I also learned from our 6th and 7th grade boys that the Xbox game, Halo, has a more detailed and thrilling storyline and myriad fascinating characters than I could have imagined; it even has a series of novels that follow the many perilous battles of Master Chief (though as one boy confessed, the language and gore throughout the books may be inappropriate for some students). The boys' enthusiasm reminded me of my own for the pulp science fiction classics, A Princess of Mars and The Chessmen of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, which I read at about the same age.

This group will be meeting again on Friday, August 31st. The 6-8th grade students will be discussing Happenstance Found: Books of Umber vol. 1, by P.W.Catanese, at 5:00pm. The 3rd -5th grade students will be discussing Fortune's Magic Farm, by Suzanne Selfors, at 5:30pm. In the meantime students can chat about these and other books they are reading in our Student Discussion Forum on Goodreads.

The Jane Austen Book Club made for a pleasant evening, with varied and agreeable company. A BIG thank you to Laura who conceived the idea in the first place and brought delicious snacks to boot! I cannot wait to participate in more stimulating discussion and friendly conversation with this excellent group of Austen fans!

We have decided to read Sense and Sensibility first. We will be meeting twice monthly, once halfway through, and then again when we finish reading. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, August 14th at 5pm. We agreed to each bring refreshments to share at each meeting. Please contact me (Kristin) to let me know what you plan to bring. R(T)B will provide plates, napkins, and drinks. Current members, anyone interested in joining the group, and even those who are just interested in chatting about books, can use our online Book Discussion forum at Goodreads. I hope to see you all there, as this is an excellent way to share your book recommendations and talk books even between meetings!

Thanks again to all of you who participated in our very first book clubs! Until next time, please visit our discussions on Goodreads and make sure to invite your friends to the next meeting.

Happy Reading,
Kristin
